Career
Larry Page attended Stanford University’s doctoral program and met Sergey Brin there. Their interest was piqued by the concept of enhancing the capability to extract meaning from the enormous amounts of Internet data. Operating out of Page’s dorm room, they developed a novel type of search engine technology that counted each website’s backing links, or the number of other pages linked to it, and relied on web users’ own rating abilities. In an effort to expand their search engine, Brin and Page raised approximately one million US dollars from friends, relatives, and other outside angel investors. Their extended search engine was given the name Google because they misunderstood the term googol, which is a mathematical term for the 100th power.
With Page serving as CEO, the two had established Google Inc. by September 1998. Page left his position as CEO in 2001 to become the president of technologies at the company. CEO duties were assumed by technology executive Eric Schmidt.
